Simul by Yuri Rochev this Thursday

By popular request, our very own Yury Rochev will be playing all-comers simultaneously on Thursday 4 October in the Bridge Centre.  7.45 start.

Please try to arrive on time (or earlier) so that we can start promptly.

For those of you who might not know Yury, he is easily the strongest player in Galway Club, has been board 1 of the Galway Club team throughout its 8 years’ existence, and is a past winner of the Galway Congress.  His current Irish rating puts him as the fourth strongest player in Ireland, and he was awarded the FIDE Master title in 2011.

This event is free to paid-up club members; €10 for non-members.

For those who have not played in a simultaneous before, the rules will be explained before the start; a basic introduction can be found in the wikipedia entry for “simultaneous exhibition”.

New members are particularly welcome – including those of you who who came to the Cottage over the summer but have not been to the club yet.

The season was kicked off last Thursday with a blitz event. There was a three-way tie for first place, between the three highest rated players (Joona Kiiski, Oissine Murphy, and Pete Morriss).  The grading prize was won by Andrew Barber.

  1. Pete Morriss says:

15 players came to take on Yury (including a visitor from Austria) – and Yury beat the lot of us. 15 – 0. And to make it more difficult, at Yury’s suggestion it was a clock simul, rather than the standard format without clocks: each of us had 90 minutes to make all his moves, and Yury also had 90 minutes on his clock for each game, but had to play all 15 games at the same time. I think that, if nothing else, rushing around between all the boards will have given him more physical exercise than he normally takes in an evening. The players who seemed to give him the most mental exercise were Joona Kiiski, Paul Ezergailis, and our Austrian visitor Gernot Isola. But the star of the evening was undoubtedly Yury.
