The following documents are a collection that members of the club have either put together or used for coaching beginners and intermediate players.
You can use any of these documents if you find them useful but please credit the original author.
| Chess Coaching Manual | Chess coaching manual from Ron Cummins who coaches in the East Galway area and helps run the Galway Chess Congress. Ron can be reached at 085-7329764 or at roncummins[at] eircom.net (replace the [at] with the @ sign). |
| Chess Manual | Chess Manual from Chess Federation of Canada |
| Chess Rules Summary | One page chess rules summary from Chessz.com |
| Exeter Chess Club | Someone (Dave Regis?) put some serious effort into this site. If only I'd time to go through it all. Checkout the database of instructive games on the site. One of its many treasures. |
Ronan's Docs
The following documents are ones that I put together for coaching at one stage or another. When I mention level 1, 2 or 3, these are meant to correspond with the levels from John Alfred's monthly competitions. Contact me at ronanduke [at] gmail.com if you want the originals.
| Exchanging Explained | Explains how to exchange pawns and pieces without losing material. Most of this is level 1 and maybe a bit level 2. |
| Puzzles on Exchanging | Puzzles (and solutions) to help you understand Exchanging. Puzzle start off at the very basics (level 1) but the last few are reasonably advanced (level 3). |
| Endgames | Basic endgames showing how a game is drawn and basic checkmates. |
| Discovered Check | Explains discovered check - includes puzzles which are relatively advanced (ie level 2-3). |
| How to castle | Explains the rules about castling with some puzzles to check you understand them. |
| More on Castling | Goes into castling in more detail including castling on opposite sides. Looks at 2 games from Fischer. Probably level 2-3. |
| The Fork in chess | Looks at the 'Fork' (also known as the double attack) in chess. Includes some puzzles. |
| The Pin in chess | Looks at the 'Pin' in chess. Doesn't include puzzles but goes through the famous game, Morphy v Duke of Brunswick, which featured an unusual number of pins and a very pretty finish. |
| Exercise Sheet - The Pin | 20 puzzles with the pin as the main motif. Typically set at level 2-level 3 standard. |
| Exercise Sheet - The Pin - The Solutions | Solutions to the exercises on the previous sheet. |
| Sample Game Analysis | Looks at a game the author played with a view to showing why it's important to look ahead. Also re-iterates the power of the pin. Level 3. |
