The Galway Winter League is the primary club competition held by the Galway Chess Club. Started in Sept 2002, it is run each year as a 7 round ICU-rated tournament with typically one round played each month from Sept/Oct until the following April.
The winner of the tournament is declared club champion. The Galway Winter League 2009/10 finished up on April 18th 2010 with Marek Goban making it 4 wins out of the last 5. Well done Marek. See the links for all information on this year's competition as well as previous years. The 2011 Winter League will start up, probably in Sept this year - keep an eye on the site for more details or sign up to our newsletter at news-subscribe [at] galwaychess.com.
The entry fee for the league will be €15 for waged, and €10 for unwaged. Entrants from Galway need to be members of Galway Chess Club and also members of ICU.
Each players gets 90mins to complete all moves - this is the minimum time required in order for the tournament to be rated by the Irish Chess Union (ICU). The time is set to the minimum so that the games can be completed at a reasonable hour given that they typically start at 8pm.
